A Special Post for the Spatial Creator Community

Spatial.io is sunsetting its Creator platform on July 27, 2026. If you're looking for a Spatial.io alternative, here's what Metasteps offers.

If you build immersive 3D worlds, you probably read Jinha Lee’s, Spatial’s CEO, note with a knot in your stomach. At least we did. On July 27, 2026, Spatial.io is sunsetting its Free and Pro Creator tiers and switching off 3D World hosting for them. After that date, exported or not, those worlds will cease to exist.

Spatial spent nine years showing people that the web could be a place you step into instead of just looking at. Many of us at Metasteps watched what their community made, the galleries, the classrooms, the strange and beautiful hangouts, and were genuinely moved by it.

We want to start by saying the obvious: this is a real loss for the community. If you're reading this while figuring out where to go next, this is written for you; it explains what's happening, what it means, and what we can actually do to help.

What the Spatial sunset means for you and your work

In plain terms:

  • Now through July 27, 2026: your Spatial account remains fully accessible. This is your window to export the content you host there and care about.
  • July 27, 2026: Free and Pro Creator hosting ends. Spatial has said clearly that after this date, files are permanently deleted from their servers.

If you're on Spatial.io, the single most important thing you can do today is export your assets from Spatial.io while it’s still open. Spatial has emailed active accounts download links for their uploaded content. Get your 3D models, images, audio and reference material onto your own drive.

Why did this happen? Will it happen again?

Spatial named the real culprit: hosting and scaling open, multiplayer 3D worlds is very expensive. For a platform carrying huge live worlds for a broad consumer base, the math eventually stops working for independent creators.

We pay close attention to that warning. That’s why we build Metasteps around interactive, web-based spaces designed for storytelling, exhibitions and learning, rather than always-on open metaverse worlds. That focus is what keeps it sustainable to run. Although it serves similar goals, Metasteps is a different product for a more durable purpose.

What Metasteps actually is

If you're looking for a Spatial.io alternative, Metasteps is the best alternative.

Metasteps is a no-code, browser-based platform for building interactive 3D spaces. You start from a template or a blank canvas, design your environment with drag-and-drop tools, and fill it with images, video, 3D objects, live streams, portals, info points and embedded web tools like forms and surveys. When it's ready, one link puts your visitors inside it, on a web browser, tablet, phone or VR headset. You can publish to the world or to a select few; you can also embed the space straight into your own website or email.

In other words: the things you love about building immersive experiences, without the parts that make them fragile.

Bringing your Spatial work across

Because Metasteps is no-code, rebuilding a space is fast. Most creators have a polished place standing again within minutes. We'll help you bring your exported Spatial.io assets in and get your space rebuilt, so the move feels less like starting over and more like changing address.

Where do you build next

Spatial told its community their talent would matter wherever they landed next. We think that's exactly right and we believe the safest place to land is here.

Export your work from Spatial before July 27, take a breath, and when you're ready to see what your spaces could look like on a platform built to keep them online forever, come and talk to us.
